Like the Hybrid Booster Drive, Connaught's retrofit hybrid system uses ultra capacitors exclusively. The small diesel delivery vans are more efficient because of addition of a system for storing and re-using electric power produced by regenerative braking.
Recovered energy can be directed to the third rail or catenary to be used by nearby trains. Subway cars have been equipped with such systems for years.
