And, how about the drought after this one?

“Would that be the mega-drought forecast for the Southwest?”

“Oh, I thought you were referring to Year Eight of a perfect drought in Southern California. Then you must be referring to the tough time in New South Wales?”

“The Sudan? Venezuela? Zimbabwe?”

No, no, no. All of those are places, where drought is effecting millions of people. I am talking Chattahoochee.

“Come again?”

The Southland - There are drought conditions in Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, North and South Carolina, Virginia and especially Georgia. On October 11 the commissioner of Atlanta’s Department of Watershed Management made a plea for conservation because of the severe drought that has forced restrictions on 61 counties in north Georgia…Robert J. Hunter called it a drought “of historic magnitude.” He said everyone must come together to protect and conserve limited water resources. “The Level 4 declaration is just the latest step in asking Georgians to do their part to conserve as much of our existing resources as possible.”

Lake Lanier Oct 2007

Lake Sidney Lanier, metro Atlanta’s main source of water, has about three months of storage left, according to state and federal officials.

Stacy Shelton, along with staff writers Matt Kempner and Duane Stanford1, are telling Atlantans that Lake Lanier has three months of water storage left. Translation for non-Atlantans, “That’s three months before there’s not enough water for more than 3 million… to take showers, flush their toilets and cook. Three months before there’s not enough water in parts of the Chattahoochee River for power plants to make the steam necessary to generate electricity. Three months before part of the river runs dry.”

“We’ve never experienced this situation before,” stated Environmental Protection Division Director Carol Couch of the record-breaking drought and fast-falling lake.

And, some would like as little attention called to the issue as possible, because people may begin to look for other connections besides blaming the Army Corps of Engineers.

Word Map of Deforestation

“Deforestation?”

Well, certainly, deforestation is a critical factor. The Southeastern United States has a considerable forestry industry and significant potential for biomass. So, good thinking!

“Thank-you.”

And, this blog was thinking something blacker.

“I feel a rant brewing.”

You certainly do.

You see, there is a bit of denial in the United States and, particularly in the Southeastern United States about:

  1. Water Shortage is a Major Impact of Climate Change
  2. Climate Change is, in part, the result of anthropogenic Green House Gases
  3. Carbon dioxide comprise 70% of GHG and coal-fired power plants are responsible for about 30% of those carbon emissions.
