Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore in testimony March 21, 2007 before the House Energy & Air Quality Subcommittee and Science & Technology Energy & Environment Subcommittee joint hearing on climate change, recommended a pollution tax.

“In a move that could shake up the debate on global warming,” you betcha yer dingle, dahlink, Edmund L. Andrews1 reports for the New York Times that Representative John D. Dingell, Democrat of Michigan, plans to propose raising the cost of burning oil, gas and coal.

Dingell is chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. According to Andrews, he plans to propose a carbon tax with the goal of showing that Americans are unwilling to support such a measure. Perhaps, in the aftermath those patriots in Congress can take the failure of such tax policy as a mandate to re-introduce coal legislation, drilling in the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge, et cetera, which is Latin for same-o, same-o.

Of course, if “Americans” were to accept a carbon tax, it would require sacrifice, and, as Paul Krugman knows, Sacrifice is for Suckers2. As I commented on the story as relayed by Green Car Congress3, “Not to worry, though, I’m sure that kindly Emperor Fossil has an alternative to such an odious tax.”
