More on the Mega City NICE Car

Mega City

NICE is short for No Internal Combustion Engine.

With a top speed of 40 MPH, the Mega City would seem to be in the speed category of the Kewet Buddy or the Electrovaya prototype Maya 100, i.e., having a top speed that is slower than a regular car yet faster than the class of electric vehicles in the United States limited to a maximum of 25 MPH. Needless to say, there are very few choices of limited use or neighborhood electric vehicles, whereas, Britain has become the world center for electric cars at least according to a July 8 Guardian article.

The impetus comes from “the congestion charge, high price of petrol, parking incentives that some councils give for electric cars and the government’s road tax exemption.” Julian Wilford is on the ex-Lotus team that developed the Mega City NICE car.

“People have talked about electric cars for years without anything happening, but now it is all changing,” Mr Wilford says. “We find a lot of people who are really concerned about sustainability and who want genuinely different solutions. The mainstream car companies just can’t deliver that.”

The NICE car uses a lead acid battery system that can deliver about 50 miles on one charge. The Mega City can deliver such range in part because of light components used to offset the weight of the batteries. The two-seater is clad in impact-resistant polycarbonate panels over an aluminium chassis and occupant safety cell.

Along with the Reva G-Wiz, the Mega City currently is one of the least expensive electric cars available to Londoners (about £8,000). Given that the estimated electric fuel cost equates to 1p a mile, it would seem to be quite economical.

Danny’s Content visited the show and provides a vlog tour (6.6meg Quicktime).
