Hong Kong Electric launched an 800kW pilot project at Lamma Island to gain practical experience in operating a wind turbine. So far, the turbine has generated 337,000 units of electricity.
An article from Green Car Congress is an indication that the wind energy market may be changing in China. Dr. Tso Che-wah, Chief Projects Engineer for Hong Kong Electric, states that the Government has committed to 1-2% of electricity generated by renewable energy by 2012.
Our plan is to build a total of 40 triple-bladed wind turbines, each of 2.5 MW, at the wind farm which can potentially generate about 175 million units of electricity every year. This is enough energy for about 50,000 families in Hong Kong, representing about 1.6% of Hongkong Electric’s electricity output in 2005.
As land resources are scarce in Hong Kong, the development of offshore wind farm is the only viable option. Outside Japan, the Hong Kong electric grid is one of the most complex and demanding in all of Asia. Thus, such new development would need to interface with existing protective overlays that minimize any potential of damage to the Grid or outtages. The payoff is cleaner, more efficient power generation.
