
Piaggio HyS (Hybrid Scooter)
Scooters are most often found in urban settings where there is stop and go traffic. Piaggio now is testing prototype hybrid scooters; these scooters have regenerative braking.
President of the Piaggio group, Roberto Colaninno, and the mayor of the Lombardy capital city, Gabriele Albertini, have signed an agreement for the experimentation on the roads of Milan of a ‘hybrid’ motorbike with an engine running on electricity and petrol.
For the occasion, the Piaggio group delivered to the city two prototypes of the ‘HyS’, a revolutionary hybrid thermal / electric scooter. At the premier, the town administration of Milan said that the experiment jointly with Piaggio would be with a view to the development of a series of initiatives involving two wheeled modes of transport with low / nil polluting emissions.
The experiment is to last a maximum of twelve months, during which time Piaggio will provide the vehicles and the necessary assistance and maintenance. The town administration, for its part, agrees to use the vehicles in the carrying out of its work, gathering data on the performance and functioning of the vehicles and supplying to Piaggio a complete technical evaluation”.
Speaking of experimentation, what if Piaggio engineers were to use super capacitors or super cells, instead of traction batteries?
Such modifications would take advantage of
- Greater power to weight ratio; MIT researchers have demonstrated power density greater than 100 kW/kg
- Better capture from regenerative braking because capacitance is a more effective means of energy transfer than chemical change when the electric motor switches into a generator and converts torque into electricity.
- Significantly faster recharge rate
- Longer life in deep discharge applications
- No maintenance

A nice feature of these prototype hybrid scooters is an electric-only mode. No noise, no emissions. The combustion engine shuts off while in all-electric mode. Perhaps, too, this could mean a start / stop feature.
With the current high cost of ultra caps, the problem, of course, is storing sufficient amounts of energy in capacitors. One possible solution in the near future could be hybrid battery-capacitor. Another possible development could be matching ultra capacitors with a fuel cell since the performance profiles are highly complementary for driving in stop and go traffic.
Another possibility would be ultra capacitors in parallel with batteries. e-Max scooters (Standard, Sport, Comfort or Classic) feature an innovative, silicone traction battery.
